Must-Read Articles 09/23/17

Hello, everyone! We hope you had a great weekend. Here you’ll find a compilation of interesting articles that we enjoyed ourselves last week. We hope that these will inspire you with new ideas for your workplace and facility management teams!

“… smart buildings with innovative energy management can reduce carbon emissions and make the city’s grid more efficient, resulting in financial savings in the long run.”

This short article from JLL sets the scene for a great animated infographic at the bottom that summarizes how various technologies will shape future cities. From smart buildings that utilize sensors to become more efficient and provide better space management to drones and co-living, there are a lot of innovations to look forward to in the future that will drastically change the way we look at work.

“Forced social interaction has become part of career development, which is fabulous for the outgoing backslappers in the room… feel like combat training for introverts.”

James Cowan discusses one of the most overlooked issues within the modern workplace environment. He discusses that while it’s easy to see why the workplace has shifted so often to putting extroverts at the forefront, it needs to be considered that extroverts really only represent half of the population and that there are plenty of good leaders within the introvert community. It’s a call to action for organizations to start looking at their team differently to see how they can better implement the great talent they have, even if that talent tends to be a bit quieter.

The back and forth continues in striving to achieve that perfect balance in the workplace.

Ram Srinivasan understands the reactionary desire of seeing workplaces like Google and other big tech companies that have incorporated a lot of fun areas to their development lifestyle in order to increase team member happiness, and therefore their productivity (I believe most of us would like to at least spend a day there). The issue is the fact that everyone likes to work a little differently, and multi-generational values affect the office heavily, meaning there is never a one-size-fits-all solution. Take your time, evaluate your team and your organization’s values, and you’ll be on the right path to creating the best workplace you can.
